Cambodia holds a special place in my family’s heart – it was their home for 15 years. After hearing so many stories of what it was like to grow up there, it was natural for me to visit Cambodia to discover my roots while volunteering as an English teacher. I stayed in a small village by Tonal Dek river, 40km outside of Siem Reap, and taught 3 classes a day. Beyond the lack of education opportunities, I was exposed to many other eye-openers during my stay, such as: inconsistent electricity, little to no sense of personal hygiene, and lack of clean/potable water. It was such an experience to wake up to the calls of roosters and fall asleep in sweltering heat. Above all, the children in the village demonstrated an insatiable thirst to learn at any given moment despite any hardships that I, as a foreigner, recognized because to them, it’s just life.
